Welcome to Summer!
Join the Pittsburgh Camerata for our radiant June concert, Welcome to Summer: Music from Britain and Beyond–an occasion that journeys across oceans, landscapes, and the shared human experience of home. Along with music of the British Isles, we are thrilled to feature the premiere of a newly-commissioned work, Wander-Land: "The Neighbor's Anthem," by Michael Markowski with text by Andy Wilkinson.
We have created a rich and compelling musical tapestry that moves from familiar favorites to striking discoveries from across the pond and Eastern Canada; this culminates in the powerful first performance of Wander-Land. This evocative work reflects on wandering, migration, and the meaning of home–both the places we come from and the communities we build together.
The poem’s closing lines beautifully capture the spirit of the performance:
We are the tribe of wide horizon,
the wind our song,
the sky our poem;
where all the strangers,
where all the pilgrims,
they’re all our neighbors,
they’re all welcome.
It is only fitting that we begin with the music of lands many of our ancestors once called home, and conclude with this stirring reminder that, wherever we come from, we are all neighbors. Come be part of this moving musical journey–we would love to welcome you.
Music of the Americas
Celebrating the musical heritage of North, Central, and South America, The Camerata will be singing music from Early Canada, Brazil, Venezuela, Ecuador, Mexico, Argentina, the Cherokee tribe, as well as 18th-20th century America, including William Billings, Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, and Pittsburgh native Stephen Foster.
Music of the Americas will be an unforgettable concert! The program is a vibrant celebration of choral music across the American continent–sweeping from the rich traditions of Argentina and Venezuela to the voices and stories of the Huron people of Canada and the historic soundscape of old British Columbia. Along the way, you will hear the luminous simplicity of a Shaker song, echoes of 18th-century America, and the exuberant energy of Charles Ives’ circus-band-inspired world. The journey includes a suite honoring Allegheny County’s own Stephen Foster, as well as the beloved John Jacob Niles, and culminates in the quintessential American composer Aaron Copland’s chorus, “The Promise of Living,” from The Tender Land.
Tune your ears with a pre-concert talk with Dr. Matt Baumer, musicologist at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, in the Chapel from 2:15 p.m. to 2:50 p.m.

50th Anniversary Celebration
Join us for this special evening, featuring the music of Pittsburgh’s beloved icon, Fred Rogers, sung by members of The Pittsburgh Camerata. Your tax-deductible contributions to this event will support The Pittsburgh Camerata and its 50th anniversary Major Gifts Campaign.
On October 22, 2024, the Pittsburgh Camerata marked its 50th anniversary with an unforgettable evening of music, memories, and community at the elegant Pittsburgh Golf Club. This milestone celebration honored the ensemble’s half-century legacy of bringing exceptional choral music to the region while looking forward to an inspiring future.
The evening’s program was graced by Jim Cunningham, the beloved voice of WQED 89.3 FM, who served as the emcee, bringing warmth and wit to the occasion. Guests were treated to live performances by the musicians of the Pittsburgh Camerata, featuring special arrangements from the Mister Rogers Songbook—a heartfelt tribute to Pittsburgh’s cultural heritage and a nod to the values of kindness and neighborliness championed by Fred Rogers.
Adding to the evening’s delight was the presence of David Newell, widely known for his role as Mr. McFeely on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, as well as John Rogers, the son of Fred Rogers. Their participation brought nostalgic joy and a profound sense of connection to the legacy of Mister Rogers, which continues to resonate across generations.
The celebration was made possible through the generous support of the McFeely-Rogers Foundation and the Pittsburgh Golf Club, whose contributions helped create an atmosphere of elegance and camaraderie for all in attendance.
As the Pittsburgh Camerata reflects on five decades of artistry and innovation, this golden anniversary underscores its enduring commitment to excellence in choral music. Here’s to the next fifty years of music that inspires, connects, and uplifts our community.
